About us

About

PIRG is an advocate for consumers, advancing solutions to problems that affect our health, our safety and well-being.

Being a consumer advocate means being a champion for a marketplace that’s more honest and transparent, and a society that’s healthier, safer and more sustainable.

It means advocating less waste in favor of reducing, reusing and recycling more. It means preventing toxic threats to our health and safety. And it means considering the impact of new products and technologies on the next generation, not just the next quarterly earnings report.

The true north star of a successful society should not be the quantity of “stuff” we consume. It should be the quality of our lives.

Solutions that make sense

Our action and advocacy assumes society has more problems than we should tolerate and more solutions than we use.

Let’s convince companies to make products reusable, repairable and recyclable, with less plastic and other forms of waste that pollute the environment. Let’s prioritize clean air and water and choose conservation and renewable energy. Let’s grow more food that nurtures people as well as the land, with fewer pesticides, antibiotics and other quick fixes.

PIRG and our network of state organizations have a 50-year track record of bringing people together around ideas like these. They’re not liberal or conservative ideas. They just make sense.

Working together

To turn these ideas into action, we’re willing to work with anyone – Republican, Democrat or independent – when we find common ground on an issue. We work anywhere – in the state capital, a city hall, Washington, D.C., a courtroom or a boardroom – where we can make a positive difference. We don’t accept corporate contributions, and we’re not funded by the government. We rely on thousands of small individual donations. All of which help us overcome powerful special interests when they stand in the way of solutions.

Our network

PIRG is a federation of independent, state-based, citizen-funded Public Interest Research Groups, and is part of The Public Interest Network, which operates and supports organizations committed to a shared vision of a better world and a strategic approach to change.
